Mary Jo Burke

Mary Jo joined the Miller School of Albemarle in August 2004. Prior to her arrival at MSA, Mary Jo worked as a Latin tutor at Champion Tutoring in Charlottesville, VA, and taught at Woodberry Forest School. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Union College, receiving a BA in Classics in 1990. Mary Jo continued her study of Classics at the University of Virginia, receiving an MA in Latin in 1992. She did additional graduate work in Classics at the University at the Ph.D. level. Mary Jo has presented at conferences including FLAVA and CAMWS.  

In addition to teaching Latin, Mary Jo served as the faculty representative on the administration team, and as the faculty chair of the MSA Honor Board. Additionally, she has been the faculty advisor to the National Honor Society at MSA for many years.  Mary Jo also served as the Faculty Chair for the Annual Fund drive.

Because of her extensive knowledge of curriculum and instruction, and her familiarity with the Miller Community, Mary Jo was selected in 2019 to assume the directorship of faculty affairs and curriculum development at Miller School.  Mary Jo works closely with faculty to increase professional development opportunities that are relevant to our mission. She also works with faculty in revising the curriculum to best serve the interests and needs of our population.  

A transplant to Virginia from Albany, New York, Mary Jo is a die-hard New York Yankees fan who also roots for the UVa Cavaliers. In her free time, Mary Jo does volunteer work for her alma mater, Union College, in the role of Annual Fund class agent. Other pastimes include traveling, spending time with family and friends, and reading.

Aiden Burke, Mary Jo’s husband, is the Director of Technology at Woodberry Forest School. The Burkes have two sons, Patrick and Brendan.
